Mixed data repository

one storage area holding both personal and business records.

A mixed data repository is a storage area, database, file share, or document system that holds both personal records and business records in the same place. Examples include HR files stored beside project documents, or customer identity data kept with operational reports. The term matters because different data types often need different security controls, retention rules, and access permissions.

In cyber security, mixed repositories increase risk by concentrating valuable targets. If an attacker steals one container, they may get identity data, contracts, drawings, invoices, or internal plans at once. That combination can support fraud, privacy abuse, and extortion. Defenders reduce this risk by separating sensitive classes of data, enforcing least privilege, encrypting storage, logging access, and applying data classification so personal records are not bundled with active business materials unless there is a clear need.
