MITRE ATT&CK T1027.018

A classification for abusing invisible Unicode characters as an obfuscation method in malicious content.

MITRE ATT&CK T1027.018 is a sub-technique for obfuscation that abuses invisible Unicode characters to hide or split text in malicious content. The visible message can look normal to a person, but the underlying code points differ enough to confuse scanners, filters, and simple keyword rules.

This matters because many phishing and spam defenses still rely on matching strings, tokenization, or lightweight normalization. If a lure word is broken by non-printing characters, an email gateway may fail to recognize it as suspicious even though the human reader sees the intended phrase. In real attacks, this can help malicious subjects, message bodies, or file contents evade detection without changing what the victim perceives. Defenders respond by normalizing text before analysis, stripping or flagging unusual code points, and preserving the raw message for forensics. Unicode-based obfuscation is not proof of malware by itself, but it is a strong hunting signal when combined with other indicators.
