Mission window

The limited time period when a space operation can safely occur.

A mission window is the limited time period when a space operation can safely happen. In aerospace, this may be the only span when a spacecraft is in the right orbit, the target is visible, power and thermal limits are acceptable, and ground teams can coordinate the maneuver. Outside that window, the operation may be unsafe or impossible.

In cyber security, the idea maps to any time-sensitive task: patching before exploit code spreads, rotating keys before certificates expire, or restoring services before an attacker locks in persistence. Defenders also talk about an attacker’s mission window, meaning the short interval in which a vulnerability is exposed but not yet fixed. Understanding these windows matters because delays shrink options and increase risk. Good security planning uses monitoring, automation, and fallback procedures to act inside the window instead of after it closes.
