Microtomography

High-resolution X-ray imaging used to visualize internal structures inside small specimens.

Microtomography is a high-resolution X-ray imaging method that reconstructs the inside of a small object as a 3D volume. Unlike ordinary radiography, it can reveal fine internal structures without cutting the specimen open, which makes it useful when the sample must be preserved for later analysis. In pathology, materials research, and hardware inspection, it helps analysts see voids, fractures, contamination, and other hidden features.

In cyber security, microtomography matters because it supports non-destructive inspection and evidence preservation. It can be used to examine packaged chips, connectors, or suspicious objects while keeping them intact for follow-up testing. It also creates sensitive image data that must be protected: attackers could target scan files, metadata, or reconstruction settings to alter conclusions or disrupt a forensic workflow. As with other digital evidence pipelines, the key defenses are access control, provenance tracking, and validation of the imaging process.
