Methodology

The test design and measurement rules used to produce a technical result.

Methodology is the defined set of test designs, measurement rules, and assumptions used to produce a technical result. In cyber security, it covers what was tested, how it was tested, what tools and settings were used, and how success or failure was measured. A clear methodology makes results repeatable and comparable; a vague one makes conclusions hard to trust.

This matters because attackers and defenders both depend on measurement. Security teams use methodology in vulnerability scans, penetration tests, malware analysis, and incident response to avoid false confidence and missed edge cases. Attackers may also exploit poor methodology by behaving differently in lab conditions than in real environments, or by hiding behind narrow test scopes. Good methodology helps separate a real risk from a demo artifact, which is essential when evaluating claims about detection, exposure, or system performance.
