Memory specificity

the level of detail in a recalled event, such as time, place, or context.

Memory specificity is the level of detail in a recalled event, such as the exact time, place, sequence, or context. A highly specific memory is easier to verify and analyze than a vague one like “it happened sometime last week.” In cyber security, specificity matters because investigations often depend on precise recollections from users, witnesses, or administrators.

Attackers can benefit when victims remember only fragments of an event, while defenders gain useful evidence when reports include exact URLs, sender names, file names, device prompts, or the moment a login alert appeared. Security teams use structured questioning to improve memory specificity during phishing reviews, incident response interviews, and post-breach analysis. Better specificity does not guarantee accuracy, but it helps separate real indicators from guesswork and supports faster, more reliable triage.
