Memetics

The study of how ideas spread through imitation and repetition.

Memetics is the study of how ideas spread by imitation, repetition, and adaptation. In security terms, it helps explain why some messages, images, slogans, or behaviors travel faster than others: they are easy to copy, remember, and share. A meme does not need to be true to be effective; it only needs to be recognizable and socially useful enough to repeat.

This matters in cyber security because attackers and influence operators often rely on memetic content to amplify scams, social engineering, and propaganda. A catchy lure, a fake warning, or a simplified narrative can move through chats and social feeds faster than a careful explanation. Defenders use the same insight when designing awareness campaigns, phishing simulations, and clear incident messaging. The goal is to create messages that are memorable without being misleading, so users can recognize manipulation before they click, share, or comply.
