A meme is a piece of content—an image, phrase, video, or format—that spreads rapidly online because people copy, remix, and share it. In cybersecurity, memes matter because their speed and simplicity make them powerful carriers for persuasion. A meme can encode political messaging, lure users into clickbait, normalize a false claim, or make a malicious account look authentic and relatable.
Attackers use memes in social engineering, influence operations, and malware delivery. A joke image or short video may hide a phishing URL, encourage users to trust a fake community, or push a narrative that helps an intrusion stay unnoticed. Defenders watch for unusual sharing patterns, coordinated posting, and reused media fingerprints. Preserving the original file, caption, timestamp, and source helps analysts verify context before a meme is stripped of meaning and republished as “evidence.”
