Medical Identity Fraud

The misuse of someone’s personal or health information to obtain care, prescriptions, or insurance benefits.

Medical identity fraud is the misuse of someone’s personal or health information to obtain medical care, prescriptions, or insurance benefits. The stolen details can include names, dates of birth, insurance member numbers, treatment history, or provider account data. Unlike ordinary identity theft, the goal is often to make false claims or receive services under another person’s record, which can corrupt both billing and medical histories.

It matters in cyber security because healthcare data is highly valuable and hard to replace. When attackers breach a billing vendor, insurer, or provider network, they may find enough identity and coverage data to impersonate a patient, submit fraudulent claims, or open the door to downstream account abuse. Defenders reduce this risk with strong access control, encryption, audit logging, segmentation, and monitoring for unusual claim activity or changes to patient records. Rapid breach assessment and notice are also important, because exposed health information can enable fraud long after the initial intrusion.
