Maturity model

A structured framework used to assess how well an organization performs a process and where it can improve.

A maturity model is a structured framework for measuring how well an organization performs a process and how far it has progressed from ad hoc activity to repeatable, managed practice. In cyber security, it is used to rate capabilities such as access control, logging, vulnerability management, incident response, and governance.

Maturity models matter because many security failures come from inconsistent processes, not just bad technology. Attackers often exploit weak ownership, missing reviews, incomplete asset inventories, or controls that exist only on paper. Defenders use maturity models to find those gaps, compare teams, prioritize improvements, and track whether controls become more consistent over time. They are common in audits, risk management, and framework mapping, where evidence matters more than claims. A maturity score is not a defense by itself, but it can reveal whether an organization is actually able to monitor, verify, and improve its security posture.
