Maritime satellite connectivity is satellite-based broadband used to connect ships when they are beyond terrestrial cellular coverage. It is a core part of shipboard communications for passenger internet, crew access, navigation support, and operational systems when a vessel is offshore.
In cyber security, this matters because the network boundary changes at sea. Traffic may pass through satellite modems, onboard distribution equipment, and provider-managed portals, creating new points for interception, misconfiguration, or account takeover. Attackers may target weak provisioning systems, exposed management interfaces, or poorly segmented shipboard networks. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, encrypted links, segmentation between passenger and operational traffic, monitoring of satellite links, and tightly controlled remote administration.
