Manipulation

a robot's ability to grasp, move, and use objects in the physical world.

Manipulation is a robot’s ability to grasp, move, and use objects in the physical world. In industrial and cyber-physical systems, it is the step that turns software decisions into real actions: picking up a tool, turning a valve, placing a part, or handling irregular objects with force and precision. Good manipulation depends on sensors, control software, and mechanical design working together.

In cyber security, manipulation matters because it is a safety and integrity boundary. If an attacker can alter sensor readings, corrupt control commands, or confuse a vision system, the robot may grip the wrong object, apply unsafe force, or complete a task incorrectly. Defenders reduce this risk with authenticated commands, redundant sensing, anomaly detection on motion and force patterns, and task limits that prevent a compromised system from doing dangerous physical work.
