Management agent

Software on an endpoint that receives administration, monitoring, or control commands.

A management agent is software installed on an endpoint that accepts administration, monitoring, or control commands from a central console. It may report device health, apply policy, install updates, or execute remote tasks. Because it is designed to be trusted by administrators, it often has broad reach on the host and can become a high-value target if its authentication, transport security, or access controls are weak.

In attacks, a compromised or vulnerable management agent can provide a direct path to influence a machine without needing a user interface or a browser exploit. If an attacker can reach the agent locally or over the network, they may be able to issue commands, change configuration, or pivot deeper into the environment. Defenders treat these tools carefully: they should be patched quickly, exposed only to necessary networks, protected with strong authentication, and monitored for unauthorized connections or unusual administrative actions.
