A managed services provider (MSP) is a company that administers IT systems, networks, cloud services, backups, and support for other organizations. Instead of each client running every system in-house, the MSP may have remote administration tools, privileged accounts, and trusted access into multiple customer environments.
That central role makes MSPs attractive targets in cyber attacks. If an attacker compromises an MSP, they may gain a faster path to several downstream victims through shared credentials, remote management platforms, or software deployment tools. In extortion and ransomware cases, a public victim listing involving an MSP can signal risk beyond the provider itself, because the concern is not only stolen data but also exposure of client systems. Defenders reduce this risk by tightly segmenting customer environments, protecting admin credentials with MFA, limiting third-party access, monitoring privileged activity, and testing recovery procedures.
