Maintenance path

The approved way technicians service, inspect, or update equipment.

A maintenance path is the approved route technicians use to service, inspect, calibrate, or update equipment. In cyber security, it includes the tools, ports, credentials, procedures, and physical access points that let authorized people reach a system without disrupting operations.

This matters because the maintenance path is often the safest-looking doorway into a device, but it can also become an attack path if it is weakly controlled. In real environments, defenders use signed updates, locked service ports, role-based access, logging, and escort procedures to protect it. Attackers, by contrast, may exploit exposed service connectors, stolen technician credentials, or poorly documented support workflows to gain access to operational technology, embedded systems, or legacy hardware. When a system is modernized, even a small change in the service interface can alter who can touch it and how carefully that access is managed.
