Main thread

The browser execution path that handles script work, rendering, and user interaction.

The main thread is the browser’s primary execution path for running JavaScript, updating the page, painting content, and processing user actions like clicks and typing. Because so much work shares this one path, a long-running script or infinite loop can block the whole tab, making the page freeze or stop responding.

In cyber security, this matters because many phishing pages and malicious web apps rely on client-side code to guide victims through redirects, prompts, and data capture. If that code stalls the main thread, the attack chain can break before stolen credentials are sent. Defenders can spot this behavior through browser hangs, delayed rendering, or suspicious script activity, which may indicate a crafted page rather than a simple broken website.
