Low-level driver

software that interacts closely with hardware or core operating system functions.

A low-level driver is software that sits close to the hardware and the core operating system, translating requests between applications and devices. Because it runs with elevated privileges and often touches kernel-adjacent code, a flaw in a driver can crash a system, freeze input, or destabilize unrelated software. This is why drivers for devices such as keyboards, GPUs, storage, and RGB controllers can matter as much as the operating system itself.

In cyber security, low-level drivers are important for both offense and defense. Attackers may abuse vulnerable or signed drivers to gain persistence, disable protections, or execute code with high privilege. Defenders therefore treat drivers as part of the trusted computing base: they verify signatures, restrict installation, monitor for risky behavior, and test updates carefully. When a patch or configuration change triggers unexplained reboots or application crashes, a low-level driver is often a prime suspect because small compatibility issues can have system-wide effects.
