Longevity

The extension of human life expectancy, which can also lengthen working life.

Longevity is the extension of human life expectancy, often leading to longer working lives and longer use of digital systems. In cyber security, that matters because identities, devices, and access rights can remain active for many years. The longer they stay in use, the more chance there is for password reuse, outdated software, stale permissions, and accumulated trust to create security gaps.

Attackers often take advantage of long-lived accounts through phishing, credential stuffing, and social engineering, especially when users or organizations stop treating old access as high risk. Defenders reduce that exposure with least-privilege access, regular account and role reviews, multi-factor authentication, patch and device lifecycle management, and strong offboarding procedures. In practice, longevity turns security into a long-term maintenance problem, not a one-time setup task.
