Logging Reference Architecture

A blueprint for deciding what security events to collect, how to organize them, and how defenders should use them.

A Logging Reference Architecture is a blueprint for deciding which security events to collect, how to structure them, and how defenders will use the resulting data. It usually covers sources such as endpoints, identity systems, servers, cloud services, and network devices, along with retention, time synchronization, normalization, and access controls.

It matters because logs are only useful when they can support fast detection, investigation, and threat hunting. In attacks, defenders rely on a good logging architecture to spot suspicious logins, privilege changes, lateral movement, data access, and deletion of evidence. In defense, the same blueprint helps teams prioritize high-value telemetry, preserve log integrity, and make records searchable during an incident. Without this planning, organizations often collect too little, too much, or the wrong kind of data to reconstruct what happened.
