Logging and monitoring are defensive controls that record system activity and review it for signs of misuse, unauthorized access, or technical failure. Logs can capture events such as logins, privilege changes, file access, API requests, and configuration edits. Monitoring tools then analyze those records in real time or after the fact to spot anomalies.
They matter because many attacks are only visible in the trail they leave behind. Strong logging helps defenders reconstruct what happened, prove whether data was accessed, and support incident response, compliance, and legal review. Monitoring adds early warning: repeated failed logins, unusual data exports, access from unfamiliar locations, or a sudden spike in administrative actions can indicate abuse, credential theft, or insider misuse. In telecom and other data-heavy environments, effective logging and monitoring are essential for showing that privacy controls are not only documented, but actually working when sensitive customer data is at risk.
