Location data

Information that can reveal where a device or user is operating.

Location data is information that can reveal where a device, user, or session is operating. It may come from GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, Bluetooth beacons, IP-based geolocation, or app permissions that expose precise coordinates. Even when it is not exact, location data can still identify a city, building, travel pattern, or routine.

In cyber security, location data matters because it adds context to sensitive activity and can be misused for tracking, profiling, or targeting victims. Attackers may collect it through malicious apps, account compromise, or stolen logs to learn when a target is away, what network they use, or whether a device is in a high-value place. Defenders limit exposure with least-privilege permissions, clear consent prompts, logging review, and controls that let users revoke app access when location is not needed.
