Local Wireless Connection

A short-range link between nearby devices that does not require internet access.

A local wireless connection is a short-range link between nearby devices that works without internet access. Common examples include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, and QR-assisted pairing flows. In security terms, “local” does not mean harmless: the attack surface is still real if an attacker can get close enough to interact with the signal or trigger the pairing process.

These connections matter because they often carry setup, sharing, or control functions that users trust. If the software handling the link is buggy, a nearby attacker may be able to spoof a device, hijack a session, or exploit memory-safety flaws such as buffer overflows. Defenders reduce risk by pairing only in controlled environments, verifying firmware updates, limiting discoverability, and treating proximity-based features as sensitive security boundaries.
