Local-first software

An application model that performs core functions on the user’s device instead of requiring cloud processing.

Local-first software is an application model where the main work happens on the user’s device, with cloud services optional rather than required. The app may sync data, back up files, or fetch updates, but it should still open, edit, and save core content offline. This design is common in desktop tools, note apps, and office suites that prioritize direct control over files and processing.

In cyber security, local-first architecture can reduce exposure because documents, credentials, and metadata do not need to leave the device for every action. That lowers the risk of interception, account compromise in a cloud service, and unintended data sharing with third-party AI systems. It also helps defenders keep sensitive workflows inside trusted boundaries. However, local-first does not eliminate risk: macros, plugins, malicious files, and insecure sync features can still be abused. Security teams should still test updates, control extensions, and review any networked add-ons carefully.
