Local-first design

An approach that keeps core data and functions on the device whenever possible.

Local-first design is a system approach that keeps core data and essential functions on the device whenever possible, instead of sending everything to a server or cloud service. A local-first app or gadget may still sync, but it should continue working offline and store sensitive information in the smallest practical scope. This matters in cyber security because every remote dependency creates a larger attack surface: cloud accounts can be phished, APIs can be abused, and stored telemetry can be exposed. For health-adjacent devices, local-first design can also reduce privacy leakage by avoiding unnecessary collection of schedules, habits, or logs.

In real defenses, local-first design shows up as on-device processing, encrypted local storage, minimal telemetry, and clear failure handling when connectivity drops. In attacks, remote services are often the easiest place to intercept data or take over control. A well-designed local-first device limits what an attacker can reach if the network is compromised, while still making it obvious when a sync, update, or backup feature is unavailable.
