Link verification

Checking where a link really leads before opening it.

Link verification is the practice of checking where a link really points before opening it. In cyber security, this matters because the visible text of a link can hide a different destination, including a fake login page, a malware download, or a payment site controlled by an attacker. A quick check of the full URL, domain name, and any redirects can reveal whether the link matches the claimed sender or service.

Attackers rely on people clicking first and thinking later. In SMS phishing, email scams, and social-engineering lures, a message may look official and urgent while the embedded link leads elsewhere. Good defenses include hovering over links on desktop, long-press preview on mobile, using browser or mail client URL previews, and verifying sensitive requests through an official app or known website instead of the message itself. Link verification turns a risky impulse into a simple control: confirm before you click.
