Lighter-than-air craft

An aircraft that stays aloft using buoyant lift rather than wings alone.

A lighter-than-air craft is an aircraft that stays aloft because its gas-filled envelope displaces enough air to create buoyant lift. Balloons and airships are the common examples. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft, they do not depend on speed across the air to remain airborne, so their design focuses on envelope integrity, lift gas management, ballast, and low-power control systems.

In cyber security, these platforms matter because they often carry radios, cameras, GPS units, or flight controllers that can be monitored, spoofed, or disrupted if poorly secured. They can also be used as aerial observation or communications relays in defensive operations, where reliable telemetry and command links are critical. In practice, a lighter-than-air craft may look simple or harmless from the outside, but the real risk or value is in the electronics and control path underneath the visible shell.
