Lifecycle costs

Ongoing expenses such as maintenance, upgrades, support, migration, and training.

Lifecycle costs are the ongoing expenses of owning and operating software or systems after the initial build. They include maintenance, upgrades, support, migration, training, licensing, and the work needed to keep services secure and available over time.

In cyber security, lifecycle costs matter because a system is never “finished” at deployment. Attackers exploit unpatched software, misconfigurations, and outdated integrations, so defenders must budget for patching, monitoring, incident response, and periodic replacements. For procurement and risk planning, lifecycle costs are often more important than development cost alone: a cheap build can become expensive if it requires frequent fixes, security rework, or staff retraining. Good security programs account for these costs early, using total cost of ownership to compare options and avoid hidden exposure later.
