libclamav

The library core of ClamAV that can be embedded into other software.

libclamav is the core library behind ClamAV, an open-source antivirus engine. Instead of running as a standalone scanner only, it can be linked into other software through an API, letting developers add malware detection to mail gateways, file filters, cloud services, or custom security tools. It handles signature-based scanning, archive unpacking, and file analysis in a reusable form.

In cyber security, that embedability is a strength and a risk. Defenders rely on libclamav to inspect content before it reaches users, but any product built on it still depends on the upstream engine, signatures, and patch level. In real attacks and supply-chain issues, libclamav can appear inside repackaged products or thin wrappers, making provenance and version tracking important. Security teams should verify the binary, update feed, and build metadata, not just the product name.
