Legislative session

The period during which a legislature meets and considers bills.

A legislative session is the period when a parliament or congress is formally in meeting and able to debate, amend, and vote on bills. Outside the session, lawmakers may still work on proposals, but final passage is usually limited by the session calendar.

In cyber security, session timing matters because laws on online safety, breach reporting, privacy, and platform duties often depend on whether a bill can clear the chamber before the clock runs out. Security, legal, and trust-and-safety teams watch legislative sessions to plan compliance work, update policies, and prepare controls before new requirements take effect. Delays can leave gaps where protections are still voluntary, while last-minute passage can create operational friction as organizations rush to interpret and implement the new rules.
