Legacy object

an older product that remains notable because of its historical or cultural significance.

A legacy object is an older product, device, or system that remains notable because of its historical or cultural significance. In technology, this can mean a vintage computer, an early software platform, or hardware that shaped a design era even after newer products replaced it. The key idea is that the object is preserved or remembered for its importance, not for being current.

In cyber security, legacy objects matter because old technology often survives in labs, museums, businesses, and collectors’ hands. If such a device is still connected to a network, it may rely on obsolete firmware, weak authentication, or unsupported software that no longer receives patches. Attackers often target these weak points when organizations keep old systems for compatibility. Defenders treat legacy objects carefully: they isolate them, disable unnecessary services, and preserve them offline when possible. They are also useful for forensics and research, where analysts study older platforms to understand historic threats, file formats, or attack techniques.
