LED signaling

using an LED's visible state changes to convey information.

LED signaling is the use of an LED’s visible state changes, such as on/off patterns or color shifts, to convey information. In embedded systems, those patterns can indicate status, error codes, boot stages, pairing states, or data being sent between devices. Because the signal is human-visible and low-cost, it is common in hardware prototypes and simple appliances.

In cyber security, LED signaling matters because it can become a covert or side-channel communication path. A device may leak information through blink timing, brightness, or color changes even when network access is blocked. Attackers can use LEDs to exfiltrate small amounts of data or to signal between compromised components, while defenders use controlled LED behavior for diagnostics, tamper detection, and operational monitoring. Careful design should limit unnecessary state changes, document patterns, and avoid exposing sensitive information through visible indicators.
