A learning management system (LMS) is software used to organize classes, enroll users, publish course materials, track grades, and control access for students, teachers, and administrators. Common examples include platforms like Moodle and other campus portals that sit between identity systems and academic services.
In cyber security, an LMS matters because it often holds sensitive account data and serves as a login hub for a large user base. If attackers steal credentials, they may use the LMS to access course content, messages, grade records, or connected services. Defenders treat LMS security as identity security: enforce strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, least-privilege roles, session protection, and fast credential revocation. Monitoring for reused passwords, phishing, and unusual account recovery activity is also important, since a weak LMS account can become a foothold for broader compromise.
