Leak leverage

pressure created by threatening to expose sensitive material.

Leak leverage is the pressure created when someone threatens to expose sensitive material unless a demand is met. The material may be stolen data, unreleased software, credentials, internal plans, or private communications. The power comes from uncertainty: even before publication, the threat can damage reputation, disrupt operations, or force a rushed response.

In cyber security, leak leverage matters because it turns confidentiality into a bargaining tool. Attackers may use it in extortion, insider abuse, blackmail, or public shaming campaigns. Defenders treat it as a risk to data governance and incident response: verify the source of any claimed leak, preserve evidence, restrict access to sensitive builds or documents, and avoid amplifying unverified material. Strong access control, auditing, and segmented storage reduce the amount of material that can be turned into leverage if exposed.
