Leaf-spine

A data-center network design with leaf switches connecting to spine switches for low-latency, scalable traffic flow.

Leaf-spine is a common data-center network topology. Server-facing leaf switches connect upstream to a set of spine switches, and each leaf typically connects to every spine. This creates a predictable, low-latency fabric with multiple equal paths, so traffic can move across the data center in one or two hops instead of crossing a long chain of switches.

It matters in cyber security because the fabric is often the backbone for east-west traffic, virtualization, and automation. If an attacker gains control of the management or orchestration layer that programs a leaf-spine fabric, they may be able to change routing, isolate systems, or redirect traffic across many racks at once. Defenders use leaf-spine designs to improve resilience and scale, but they still need strict access control, hardened management interfaces, and logging around the controllers that configure the switches.
