Layer adhesion is the bond between successive printed layers in an FDM 3D print. When adhesion is strong, the part behaves more like solid material; when it is weak, the print can split along layer lines, flex too much, or fail under load. Adhesion depends on extrusion temperature, cooling, material choice, print speed, and how well the printer is calibrated.
In cyber security, layer adhesion matters because 3D-printed parts are often used for enclosures, mounts, adapters, lab fixtures, and custom tools. Poor adhesion can cause a printed device to crack during use, exposing hardware or making a tool unreliable. Strong layer adhesion improves durability for defensive prototypes and for offensive or forensic tooling that must survive handling, pressure, or repeated use.
