A launch failure happens when an application starts unsuccessfully or closes before it can be used. The program may crash immediately, hang during initialization, or exit after showing a splash screen. In practice, the fault is often not in the app alone: operating-system updates, incompatible drivers, security tools, or peripheral utilities can all interrupt startup.
In cyber security, launch failures matter because they can signal both defense and attack conditions. Defenders watch for repeated startup errors after patching to spot broken compatibility, tampered executables, or overreaching endpoint controls. Attackers may also exploit startup dependencies by disabling services, injecting code, or causing denial-of-service conditions that keep software from opening. When a launch failure appears, the safest response is to isolate recent changes, disable nonessential add-ons, and test whether the application still fails in a clean environment.
