Large Scale NAT, or LSN, is a carrier-grade form of Network Address Translation that lets many internal devices share a smaller pool of public IP addresses. Instead of assigning one public IP to every host, the gateway rewrites traffic so multiple clients can appear to come from the same external address.
LSN matters in cyber security because it changes how systems are exposed and how activity is logged. It can reduce IPv4 exhaustion and simplify network design, but it can also make attribution, session tracking, and abuse investigation harder. Security teams often need detailed translation logs to map a public source address back to the correct internal user or device.
In real environments, LSN is commonly found in edge appliances, ISP networks, and large enterprise gateways. Attackers may try to hide origin by blending into shared NAT traffic, while defenders use LSN records to trace suspicious connections, correlate events, and support incident response.
