A LAN, or Local Area Network, is a network that connects devices within a limited physical area such as an office, venue, or data room. It is usually faster and more controllable than internet-based access because the equipment, switches, and wireless access points are all managed on-site.
In cyber security, LANs matter because they define the trusted space attackers try to reach or abuse. A poorly segmented LAN can let one compromised laptop scan printers, servers, or admin systems, while strong controls such as VLANs, access control lists, authentication, and monitoring can limit damage. LANs also appear in defense when organizations isolate event devices, restrict who can plug in, and watch for rogue access points or unauthorized traffic. In practice, a LAN is the operational core where local connectivity, convenience, and security must be balanced.
