Labor framing

the way a debate presents work, skills, and employment as central to understanding a technology's impact.

Labor framing is a way of discussing a technology by putting work, skills, and employment at the center of the analysis. Instead of asking only what the system can do, it asks who will do the work, which tasks are automated, and what human judgment is still required. In cyber security, this matters because security tools are rarely neutral: they change how analysts, support teams, engineers, and reviewers spend their time.

In practice, labor framing shows up when organizations decide whether AI should assist a security team or replace parts of it. If automation removes human review from phishing triage, incident response, or account validation, errors can scale quickly and accountability becomes unclear. Defenders use this framing to design supervised automation, escalation paths, and clear ownership for risky actions. Attackers benefit when organizations treat security as a staffing shortcut, because over-automation and understaffing can weaken controls and make social engineering easier to succeed.
