Kill line

A pre-set milestone or condition that triggers stopping a project if it misses agreed criteria.

A kill line is a pre-set milestone or condition that forces a project to stop if it fails agreed criteria. In cyber security, it is a control that turns uncertainty into a decision point: if a system misses security testing, budget limits, logging requirements, or access reviews, work is paused or shut down instead of being allowed to drift.

Kill lines matter because risky technology can create operational exposure long before it becomes useful. For AI programs, they help stop poorly governed pilots, limit wasted spend, and prevent unsafe or unreviewed automation from reaching production. In real defenses, teams can use kill lines to disable a compromised integration, revoke credentials, or halt an agentic workflow when behavior deviates from policy. The core idea is simple: define the stop condition before the risk becomes an incident.
