Keyring

A collection of wallet keys and account records used to manage crypto accounts.

A keyring is the wallet’s internal collection of keys, account records, and related metadata used to manage crypto accounts. In browser wallets, it often holds the information needed to identify accounts, derive addresses, and coordinate signing without exposing raw private keys to every part of the application. It is a convenience layer, but it also concentrates sensitive state in one place.

Keyrings matter in cyber security because they are a high-value target for malware and malicious extensions. If untrusted code can access the extension runtime before encryption or before secrets are protected, it may read the keyring in plaintext and steal account data. Defenders treat keyrings as secret material: they limit extension permissions, prefer signed software from trusted sources, avoid storing sensitive data in unencrypted local storage, and use hardware-backed signing for stronger protection.
