JavaScript OS

A system that uses JavaScript as part of its runtime or control model.

A JavaScript OS is a system that uses JavaScript as part of its runtime, application layer, or control model. Instead of only running fixed firmware, the device may interpret scripts or expose a JavaScript API for managing hardware, logic, and services. This is common in experimental embedded platforms, device shells, and browser-like runtimes adapted for small systems.

For cybersecurity, the term matters because adding a high-level scripting layer changes the trust model. JavaScript can make a device easier to extend, but it can also increase attack surface through script injection, unsafe dependencies, weak sandboxing, or poorly controlled updates. Defenders look for signed code, strict permissions, isolated execution, and clear trust boundaries. Attackers may target the scripting layer to gain logic abuse or persistence without modifying low-level firmware. In practice, a JavaScript OS is less about the language itself and more about how much control the language gets over the device.
