IPMI, the Intelligent Platform Management Interface, is a protocol for out-of-band server management. It lets administrators power a machine on or off, inspect hardware health, view logs, and access remote consoles even when the operating system is down. Because it works below the OS, IPMI is handled by the server’s management controller rather than by normal host tools.
That low-level reach makes IPMI highly sensitive in cyber security. If an IPMI interface is exposed to untrusted networks, attackers may target its authentication flow, firmware, or web front end instead of the main server. In some cases, weaknesses can leak password-derived material, enable offline password guessing, or provide direct control over critical hardware functions. Defenders reduce risk by isolating management traffic, using strong unique credentials, disabling unused remote access features, and keeping BMC firmware updated and verified.
