Inventory Management

The process of tracking devices, roles, and system state across an environment.

Inventory management is the process of tracking devices, roles, applications, and system state across an environment so defenders know what exists, where it lives, and how it is configured. In cybersecurity, this is the foundation of visibility: you cannot protect, patch, or segment assets you have not identified. Accurate inventory also helps distinguish normal equipment from unknown or unauthorized systems, which is especially important in OT networks where legacy devices and limited scanning make discovery harder.

Good inventory management supports access control, incident response, and vulnerability management. When a user or vendor requests access, asset context can show whether the target is critical, retired, or in maintenance mode, helping teams apply least privilege and reduce risky connections. During an attack, inventory data helps defenders scope affected systems, find exposed services, and prioritize recovery. Weak inventory, by contrast, creates blind spots that attackers can exploit by hiding in forgotten assets or misclassified devices.
