Invariant testing

Testing that checks whether critical rules remain true under many conditions.

Invariant testing is a method of checking that critical rules stay true across many inputs, states, and edge cases. An invariant is a property that should never break, such as “total balances must always match,” “only approved roles can change a setting,” or “a bridge must never mint more value than it has locked.”

In cyber security, invariant testing helps catch logic bugs before attackers do. It is especially useful for smart contracts, authentication systems, and other code that manages trust or money, because small state errors can become major losses. Security teams use it in fuzzing, property-based tests, and formal checks to explore unusual sequences of actions and confirm the system still obeys its rules. In bridge contracts and payment rails, invariant testing can reveal broken accounting, unsafe upgrades, or permission flaws that might otherwise enable drains or unauthorized transfers.
