INTERPOL Red Notice

A request to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending further legal action.

An INTERPOL Red Notice is a request to member countries to locate and provisionally arrest a person while a separate legal process continues. It is not an international warrant and it does not by itself force an arrest; each country still applies its own law. In cyber security, that distinction matters because cross-border investigations often involve suspects, servers, or platform operators spread across multiple jurisdictions.

Red Notices can appear in cases involving ransomware crews, fraud rings, botnet operators, or executives tied to alleged abuse of a messaging platform. For defenders, the notice is a legal signal rather than a technical control: it may affect travel, account handling, evidence preservation, and cooperation with law enforcement. Attackers sometimes exploit confusion around the term, but security teams should treat it as a request for identification and detention, not proof of guilt or a substitute for warrants, subpoenas, or platform takedown orders.
