Internal components

Back-end services or modules that are not meant to be directly exposed to users.

Internal components are the back-end services, modules, workers, and administrative endpoints that support an application but are not intended to be directly exposed to users. They often handle sensitive tasks such as authentication, order processing, data synchronization, or plugin execution, and they may trust traffic from the rest of the platform more than public-facing pages do.

They matter in cyber security because a flaw that reaches an internal component can have a much larger impact than a bug in a simple front end. If an attacker gains code execution or abuses a trusted integration path, they may pivot into services that hold secrets, access databases, or control business logic. Defenders protect these components by limiting exposure, segmenting networks, reviewing extension and service inventories, enforcing authentication between modules, and monitoring for unusual process activity or outbound connections.
