Interface risk

the possibility of delay or confusion where multiple organizations must coordinate.

Interface risk is the chance of delay, misunderstanding, or dropped responsibility at the point where two or more organizations must coordinate. In cyber security, the “interface” may be a reporting channel, approval path, escalation desk, shared SOC workflow, or legal handoff between public and private teams. The risk is not usually a technical flaw in a system; it is a coordination failure.

It matters because many cyber operations depend on fast, well-defined collaboration. If one agency owns detection, another owns response, and a third must approve action, attackers can benefit from the gaps between them. Defenders see interface risk when incident reports bounce between teams, when authority is unclear, or when a new command structure adds extra layers before a decision is made. Reducing it means clarifying roles, escalation rules, and contacts before an incident starts.
