Integrity Checker Tool

A vendor utility used to help validate whether an appliance has been altered or tampered with.

An integrity checker tool is a vendor utility that verifies whether an appliance still matches a known-good state. It compares files, binaries, configuration data, or system signatures against trusted baselines to spot tampering, unauthorized changes, or malware persistence. On security gateways and other perimeter devices, this matters because attackers often try to alter the box after gaining access.

In practice, defenders use the tool after patching, during incident response, or when suspicious behavior suggests the appliance may have been modified. A successful check does not prove the system is clean, but a failed check is a strong warning that the device may have been compromised or manually changed. Attackers may try to disable logging, replace components, or leave behind hidden access; integrity validation helps detect those changes and supports a safer recovery decision.
