Integration endpoint

A system connection used to move data between applications, which can become a security-sensitive entry point.

An integration endpoint is a network-facing service, API, webhook, or connector that lets one application exchange data with another. In commerce platforms, it may move orders, inventory updates, payment events, or customer records between internal systems and external partners.

These endpoints matter in cyber security because they often sit at the boundary between trusted business workflows and broader network access. If they are exposed, weakly authenticated, or poorly validated, they can become entry points for abuse, data theft, or remote code execution in connected services. Defenders should treat them as sensitive assets: restrict who can reach them, require strong authentication, validate inputs, monitor requests for unusual volume or malformed data, and keep patches current. During incident response, integration traffic is often worth reviewing because attackers may use legitimate-looking data flows to blend in or to pivot into other systems.
